Sew…Silhouette now has a blog!
I know that we are a little late to the blog scene by over a decade, but after being in business for seven years and in the alteration world for ten, I realize my team and I have a lot of knowledge in this industry that just needs to be shared. We work in a dying art. Literally people are surprised when they meet us for the first time and we are not all grandmas. As sewing knowledge is no longer being passed down through generations, we have discovered a huge disconnect between people and their clothing. This ranges from never even thinking about how your clothes are made: by whom or where, to having no idea how to do basic mending or how to properly launder different materials.
This is a huge issue. For the past two decades fast fashion has sped up and people have changed their buying habits from purchasing a few high quality items a year to purchasing too much for too cheap. People bring us items purchased online, sometimes from knock off direct from China websites and wonder why this EXTREMELY cheap item doesn’t fit or look good? Well, first off, STOP DOING THIS! I don’t fully subscribe to Marie Kondo’s method, but I do think it is very important to love what you own and to stop buying for the sake of buying. And honestly, stop buying online. Go to a store. Touch your clothes.
This blog will be 30% my ranting, 60% educational and 10% swearing. For everyone that sews or has ever tried sewing, you know swearing is mandatory. I personally hate click bate (mainly because I always fall for it). I click the intriguing headline only to have the content always fall short of what was promised. THIS WILL NOT BE THAT WAY! We will be going deep into topics and actually share real information.
Currently on the docket will be helpful tips in laundering and storing your garments for longevity and pointers on shopping with alterations in mind. We will get into explaining how the alteration process works, what alterations are easy and inexpensive and what garment construction to avoid if alterations are needed. Plus, we will be sharing amazing projects we are working on, and word vomiting probably too much information for brides about their alteration journey and how to make it as easy as possible from the start. Hopefully we will add some collaborative pieces along the way from specialists in the sewing/stylist fields. Mainly, I hope to create a community and have some fun. The more you know, the easier our job will be. And maybe we can just solve some world problems along the way.
The goal is to post once to twice a week. We will see…we do get quite busy over the summer months. If you have any questions you would love answered, PLEASE email me! I would love to find out what content you guys want to see.
